Materials:
*6 colors of worsted weight yarn - in amounts of about 2 oz each.
I used I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby in Peacock, Grey Beard, and Brown
and Vanna's Choice in Terra Cotta, Taupe, and Fuchsia.
*Crochet Hook, US Size G
*Crochet Hook, US Size I
*Yarn needle for weaving in ends.
Notes: This hat is worked from the band to the top. The band is worked in rows. The rows are joined to make a circle, and then the rest of the hat is worked in rounds.
Instructions:
Band:
With G hook and taupe:
Ch 12.
Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook, and in each st across. (10 dc) Turn.
Row 2. Ch 3, (counts as dc now and throughout), working in BACK LOOPS ONLY, dc in each st across. (10 dc). Turn.
Rows 3 - 30: Repeat Row 2.
At the end of Row 30, slip stitch first row to last row to create a tube for the band of the hat.
Rotate the piece so you're working into the sides of the rows you just made.
Round 1: Switch to I hook. Ch 3 (counts as dc now and throughout), work dc in same row end, work 2 dc in the end of each row. Join with a sl st. ( 60 dc). Fasten off taupe.
Round 2: With Fuchsia, join with a dc, dc in each st around. Join with a sl st. Fasten off. ( 60 dc).
Round 3: With Grey, repeat Round 2.
Round 4: With Peacock, repeat Round 2.
Round 5: With Brown, repeat Round 2.
Round 6: With Orange, repeat Round 2.
Round 7: With Taupe, repeat Round 2.
Round 8: With Fuchsia, repeat Round 2.
Round 9: With Grey, repeat Round 2.
Round 10: With Peacock, repeat Round 2.
Round 11: With Brown, repeat Round 2.
Round 12: With Orange, repeat Round 2.
Round 13: With taupe, join with a dc, dc in each of next 2 sts, work dc dec over next 2 sts, * dc in each of next 3 sts, work dc dec over next 2 sts * , repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st. Fasten off taupe.
Round 14: With Fuchsia, join with a dc, dc in next st, work dc dec over next 2 sts, * dc in each of next 2 sts, work dc dec over next 2 sts, * repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st. Fasten off fuchsia.
Round 15: With Grey, join with a dc, work dc dec over next 2 sts, * dc in next st, work dc dec over next 2 sts * repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st. Fasten off grey.
Round 16: With Peacock, Join with a sl st, ch 2, work dc in next st (counts as a dc dec), * work dc dec over next 2 sts * repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to first dc (not ch 2). Fasten off peacock.
Round 17: Join brown with a sl st, ch 3, work dc in next st *( counts as a dc dec) * work dc dec over next 2 sts * repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to first dc. Fasten off brown.
Weave the yarn tail through the last round and cinch tight.
Attach pom pom.
Pom pom instructions:
With any 2 colors from the hat, wrap yarn around 3 fingers 50 to 60 times.
Pull a piece of yarn through the tube of loops you just made. Tie a square knot.
Turn the bundle of loops over and tie a square knot on the opposite side.
Cut through the loops on the top and the bottom.
You'll end up with a scraggly pom pom. Trim it into a round shape.
Ignore the yarn carnage. :)
Then sew the pom pom to the hat with the tails from tying the pom pom
