This hat is deceptively simple. The great striations in color are a result of variegated yarn - no switching of colors at all!
This hat is worked all in single crochets, making it perfect for a beginner.
If you are brand new to crocheting, head on over to my tutorials page to see how to work a beginning chain and how to work a single crochet.
Materials you'll need:
Crochet hook, US Size I
1 skein Loops and Threads Impeccable yarn (found at Michael's craft stores) - in the colorway Folklore
Yarn needle (optional) for weaving in ends.
Skills you'll need to know:
Chain
Slip stitch
Single crochet
Notes:
This hat is worked in the round. After each round, you will NOT slip stitch to join the rounds. This would leave a trail of bumps at the joins that we are trying to avoid. I suggest getting a scrap piece of yarn or a stitch marker to keep track of where your rounds start and end.
Sizing:
These instructions are written to make sizes to fit A.Toddlers, B. Children/Tweens/Adult, and C. XL Adults. The Toddler size will fit heads between 18" and 20". The Children/Tween/Adult size will fit heads between 20" and 23". The XL Adult size will fit heads from 22" to 25" approximately. I usually only do the XL adult size for men who are a little larger in stature. I've found the Children/Tween/Adult size to work well for a majority of my clients.

Some of my favorite easy yarns for beginners:
Vanna's Choice by Lion Brand
I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby
Red Heart Soft by Coats and Clark
Loops and Threads Impeccable by Michael's craft stores
Red Heart Classic by Coats and Clark - however, this yarn is the most scratchy of the lot. It's the cheapest, but your fingers may pay the price. ;)
If you want to upgrade to an even more swanky yarn ;) , I recommend Swish worsted weight by KnitPicks.
Good luck! I'd love to see pics of your finished pieces! Post them on my facebook page, and share! www.facebook.com/yarntwisted
